Personal History: Bruno on the Disney Wiki

Personality: Bruno is overall a somewhat quiet man who's not especially good with people. He's socially awkward and sometimes lacking in tact, but he's not unkind. Quite the opposite in fact. He's a kind and gentle person once someone gets to know him, it's just that getting to know him takes a bit of effort. He's also more comfortable with animals, particularly small ones, than people; he always was to a certain degree, but spending ten years with rats as his only friends really cemented it. So anyone with a pet is likely to have a better shot at making friends with him.

He's often somewhat cowardly, preferring to avoid danger or confrontation when possible, but if he thinks someone he cares about is in danger, he'll rush in to try and help or defend them. Whether or not he actually can help is the question. In the case of personal conflicts his above mentioned social awkwardness can sometimes prove a hindrance, and in terms of a physical fight? Yeah, Bruno's not going to be especially helpful there. He doesn't consider himself especially pacifistic and will certainly try to defend himself or others if physically attacked, but the Encanto where he's lived his entire life is a peaceful place. It's unlikely he's even witnessed any person-on-person violence more serious than a fistfight in his life, much less participated in it. Missions are going to be a steep learning curve for him.

He'll be quite willing to talk about his home and family- just try and get him to not talk up Julieta's cooking if it comes up- but will be reluctant to talk about himself and his own gifts. (Ironic, I know, given the song.) He's reunited and reconciled with his family, but it takes more than a familial revelation and a musical number to undo decades of being told- implicitly and sometimes explicitly- that you're a jinx and a weirdo and that your powers only cause trouble, combined with the pressure of unrealistically perfectionist standards.

And there we need to take a moment to talk about 'Hernando' and 'Jorge'. They aren't split personalities, and Bruno is fully aware that they're fictional. What they are is a coping mechanism both for isolation and for things Bruno feels he can't face as just himself. By putting on the character of Hernando- who fears nothing- or Jorge - who feels nothing- Bruno was able to spend his time patching the cracks in his family's home without panicking or giving up by giving himself a bit of distance from the problem at hand.

Another coping mechanism is the various superstitions and rituals he follows when especially nervous about something. Knocking on wood, holding his breath while crossing his fingers, throwing salt over his shoulder (the sugar is less traditional, but he was trying to be extra thorough), avoiding stepping on cracks, etc. Even the ritual he uses when prophesying is roughly 75% superstition, but is necessary to get himself into the right mindset to deliberately look into the future. Not all of his various superstitions will be workable on the train, of course but he'll still probably try to incorporate the ones he can.

Bruno does genuinely want to help others, both with his magic and via more mundane means. He just lacks confidence, both in his abilities and in himself. Hopefully his time in the void will help him find his feet a bit.

Key themes: Time- Bruno's room, his powers, and even his clothing all have a theme of time. He looks into the future, he tries to buy his family more time by patching the cracks, the entrance to his room is a giant hourglass, he has a pattern of hourglasses on his rauna, etc.

Isolation- Whether deliberate on his part or not, Bruno has spent much of his life isolated from others, even his family to various degrees. The most obvious example, of course, is his decade living in the Casita's walls, but even before that Bruno was the black sheep of the Madrigal family, and thus felt isolated from others due to being viewed as creepy and a jinx by the community at large.

Rats- Bruno's furry little friends, who serve both to display his kind, gentle nature and to serve as an animal that often finds itself in a similar situation. Like Bruno, rats are often shunned and viewed as pests, and thus are often forced to live on the periphery of society. But also like Bruno, they're actually gentle and friendly under the right circumstances and with people who understand them.

Family/peer pressure- Specifically, the negative results of it. A fair number of Bruno's issues were either caused or exacerbated by the unreasonable pressure from his mother to be perfect, and by the people of the Encanto unfairly blaming him for causing the things he predicted and effectively shooting the messenger.

Main Motivation: Family and community, hands down. Everything Bruno's done up til now has been to help, please, or protect his family, and by extension the community they live in. And though his biological family isn't present on the train, he'll certainly want to do his best for the on-board community there.

Skills: In terms of physical abilities, Bruno's are mostly those of a normal human. He's a fairly fast runner, at least over short distances, and has some pretty good parkour skills for a guy his age from running and climbing around in the walls for all those years. He can ride a horse, but not super-well, at least if he's in a hurry. He's also apparently got some pretty good art skills, is a pretty darn good trainer of rats- and likely similar small animals-, and can make wall spackle, all with very limited materials. He claims that he's also good at acting, but that's somewhat debatable. He is highly creative in general though, and managed to make up detailed storylines for his 'rat theater' to keep himself entertained in his self-imposed exile.

But of course, what Bruno's best known for is his ability to prophesy. With a bit of setup, including a magic circle of sand, Bruno is able to look into the future and see images of things to come. Bruno has no control over what appears in the visions, and usually lacks specific context for what he sees; he can see the 'what' but no specifics as to 'when' or 'how'. The images can sometimes appear jumbled and out of order, though he can focus in on specific ones, and the most prominent image from a vision is recorded on a tablet of emerald-green glass that can glow magically in the dark. If Bruno splits his focus between two different images in the vision though, the image on the tablet can shift depending on the angle it's being held at or viewed from. Anyone inside the circle with Bruno can also see the vision as well.

Naturally, this ability makes Bruno a prime candidate for pre-mission visions. But Bruno's gift also puts him in a position to be able to deliberately look into the future for plot purposes- if the mods are ever so inclined- and also to do so at the request of other characters. Bruno will be highly reluctant to do this or even reveal his ability at first, but once convinced he'll offer his services as a seer to the rest of the train. For ease of gameplay and for everyone's sanity, Bruno will only be able to see events from a character's normal canon future (OCs or AUs other than CRAU from games would need to provide relevant info) or things that have already been plotted out by the players to happen in the future on the train. The only places with enough space to perform the ritual on the train are likely the gym and the upper level of the music car (provided the chairs were moved out of the way), so one of them would likely have to be at least semi-reserved for the time the ritual is to take place, but with sufficient arrangement (and willingness to cleanup leftover sand) it would work just fine.

Item: A nice, framed copy of the family photo from the end of the movie.

Sample: So, two oracles walk into a car...

Notes: Yes, Bruno is aware of the song. He thinks it's just as catchy as the rest of the world does, but doesn't wanna talk about it.
